New Bus Passes, Fares Launch Jan. 3

December 29th, 2011 by Amber Lester

The Williamsburg Area Transit Authority will launch its new goWATA pass programs and fares on Jan. 3.

All-day goWATA passes will be sold on WATA buses, while the new six-day, seven-day and 30-day bus passes will be sold during business hours at the WATA Main Office, located at 7239 Pocahontas Trail, and at the Williamsburg Outlet Mall WATA storefront location. The main office is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday.

The passes cannot be shared with others, because WATA’s scanning mechanism doesn’t allow multiple scans in a short time period. An all-day pass is a paper fare card, similar to existing passes. All other passes can be issued in the form of a SmartCard that is scanned at the fare box when boarding the bus. Customers can choose which card they would like at no additional charge.

Passes become active upon purchase. Seven-day passes are good for unlimited rides for seven consecutive days, including the purchase date. The 30-day goWATA Pass is good for unlimited rides for 30 days including the purchase date. The 6 Ride All Day (RAD) goWATA Pass expires one year after the date of purchase.

The 6 RAD goWATA Pass is good for unlimited rides on any six days throughout the year following the purchase. The days do not have to be consecutive. When a passenger purchases a RAD pass, he or she will receive one pass; the first time the pass is scanned, the passenger will receive a new pass with the new total number of RAD passes, plus an All-Day goWATA pass for the day of activation.

The fare prices will stay the same for one-way cash fare; college and TNCC fares; senior/disabled persons’ one-way passes; ADA/paratransit fares; and transfers. Fares can be paid with cash or check at the WATA offices, or with cash on the buses. Expired passes cannot be renewed; a new pass must be purchased.

The new fares are as follows:

• All-Day goWATA pass: $2 for regular fare; $1 for senior/disabled

• Trolley Round-trip pass: $1 for regular; $.50 for seniors/disabled

• Middle/High School Students One-Way Fare: $.50

• 7-Day goWATA Pass: $10 for regular fare; $5 for senior/disabled

• 6 Ride All Day (RAD) goWATA Bundle Pass: $10 for regular fare; $5 for senior/disabled

• 30-Day goWATA pass: $35 regular fare; $17.50 for seniors/disabled
