Weather-Related Closures, Cancellations

Heavy rain and the threat of flash floods prompted several school divisions to postpone the start of the school day today. Since the rain hasn’t let up much, many after-school activities have been canceled or postponed.

York County public schools have canceled all after-school club meetings and athletic team practices today. All games scheduled for today have been postponed, with rescheduled dates to be decided.

Williamsburg James City County public schools have canceled or postponed many activities as well.

There was supposed to be a lot going on today – cross country, field hockey, volleyball – to name a few sports – but the weather has made for other plans. All after-school sports practices for York County public schools have been canceled today, as have the games. If you have a student-athlete, make sure to pay attention to email, which is how you’ll learn about rescheduled events.

Hampton Roads Academy has also postponed after-school contests set for today – teams were to have traveled to Nansemond Suffolk for volleyball and field hockey.

Lafayette-Bruton JV football has been moved to 7 p.m. Saturday. The JV game between York and New Kent has also been postponed to 7 p.m. Monday. The Warhill-Grafton JV football game will be played at 5 p.m. today at Bailey Field.

The Warhill-Smithfield volleyball game for tonight has been postponed to Monday, Oct. 4.

The Warhill-York field hockey game has been postponed to Friday, Oct. 8.

Poquoson has a leaky roof so their volleyball match against Lafayette has been moved to Monday.

And in middle school action, Tuesday’s football game between Hornsby and Yorktown that was postponed because of weather has been rescheduled to Tuesday, October 21 at 5:30 p.m. at the Hornsby field. Today’s girls basketball games for all public middle schools have been postponed, with new dates to be decided.

Williamsburg James City County public schools will operate on a two-hour delay. All 12-month employees are expected to report to school on time where possible.

Greenwood Christian Academy is operating on a two-hour delay. There will be no before-school care. Elementary/Middle school begins at 10:50 a.m. and Squirrels at 11 a.m. Morning preschool classes have been canceled, but afternoon preschool will meet as usual.

GCA’s Elementary/Middle School Back to School Night will begin tonight at 6:30 p.m. as scheduled, unless parents are notified otherwise.

Williamsburg Montessori will open at 9:30 a.m., a two-hour delay, due to weather.
