Air Traffic Continues Upward Trend for NN/W’burg

July 30th, 2010 by Kim Lenz

newportnewsairportlogoThe first weeks of summer proved to be strong ones for travel through the Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport.

Passenger traffic was up 7.8 percent in June, with 104,843 air travelers using the airport compared with 97,278 passengers in June 2009.

That follows a strong May, which saw a year-over-year increase of 8.5 percent and an all-time high for May passenger travel.

“The Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport continues to grow and improve to meet the needs of our passengers. With great low fare service, key non-stop destinations, courtesy skycap assistance and shuttle service in the parking lots, the airport continues to be a great choice whether traveling for business or pleasure,” said Herbert H. Bateman, Jr., Chairman of the Peninsula Airport Commission.

The airport’s executive director was also encouraged by the strong performance.

“We have experienced a busy summer at the airport and are extremely pleased with the growth we continue to see,” said airport chief Ken R. Spirito. “Passenger loyalty, short security wait times and on-time flights have all contributed to our success. We hope to see this trend continue into the winter months as we continue our commitment to excellent service and customer satisfaction.”

The Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport is served by four airlines: AirTran Airways, Delta Air Lines, Frontier Airlines and US Airways with non-stop service to seven domestic destinations (Atlanta, Boston, Charlotte, Denver, NY-LaGuardia, Orlando and Philadelphia) and connections throughout the world.

We’ve had bad experiences with AirTran. Direct flights either depart at 0600 in the morning or land at 2100 at night. AirTran is also prone to cancel flights at the last minute if they are not full.

We have had excellent service with Airtran. Many family vacations to Fla. no delays and no cancellations.

Not so with United – just about every flight out of RIC delayed and also from IAD back to RIC many delays with some getting in very late.

Newport News nice airport – just needs Groome transportation back there for shuttle to Wmsbg.

AirTran is an excellent airline and provides great service to this area. It is not a policy or a practice for AirTran to cancel flights if they are not full. AirTran flights at PHF stay pretty full. The morning and late night flights mentioned are consistently on-time. If any flight is delayed or canceled, it’s usually an isolated incident.

Airtran ROCKS. We have had a number of great experiences flying to about 6 different destinations and you just cant beat the service for the price.
