After an outstanding performance in the victory against James Madison on Saturday, sophomore running back Jonathan Grimes has been selected as the Colonial Athletic Association Co-Offensive Player of the Week. He shares the honor with Northeastern running back John Griffin.
Grimes’ efforts helped the Tribe win 24-3 against JMU, and also to preserve the team’s #5 national ranking. Richmond remains ranked #1, and Villanova is just ahead of the Tribe at #4.
Grimes rushed for a career-high 158 yards on 20 carries (7.9 yards per carry) and scored a touchdown late in the fourth quarter to help secure the Tribe’s 24-3 victory. The performance ranks as the 22nd-most yards on the ground by a W&M player in school history. En route to totaling a season-high 202 all-purpose yards, the Palmyra, N.J., native also recorded three catches for 12 yards and registered 32 return yards.
With his impressive performance against the Dukes, Grimes now leads the conference and ranks 20th nationally with 91.6 rushing yards per game. Grimes also leads the league and ranks 19th nationally with 137.7 all-purpose yards per game. His numbers have been especially impressive in conference play, as he is averaging 110.5 rushing yards per game with three touchdowns through four games.
With a 6-1 record, the fifth-ranked Tribe will return to action again this Saturday when it plays at Rhode Island.
