The Virginia Department of Transportation signal technicians are working to correct the signal timing at the intersection of Route 17 and Lafayette at Gloucester Point.
Commuters on Route 17 north have experienced long delays this week at the base of the Coleman Bridge due to a new traffic pattern established in conjunction with the Gloucester Point Improvement Project.
Phase I of the project, located just north of the toll booth, began this week and required a traffic shift including the elimination of the turn lane. That created a no left turn pattern prior to the intersection of Route 17 and Lafayette Heights Drive (Route 1206).
The left turn arrow at the signal is being adjusted to provide a longer turn cycle, thus allowing more cars to clear the intersection per cycle. Once the timing has been adjusted crews will continue to monitor the traffic flow to ensure that delays are kept to a minimum.
This phase of the project should be complete in spring 2010, at which time the turn lane will be restored.
