VDOT Lane Closures for Aug. 31-Sept. 6

Rain Pushes Rte. 5 Bridge Closure to Overnight Sept. 2-3
The planned closure tonight of the Judith Stewart Dresser Memorial Bridge (Route 5 east/west (Charles City/James City) over the Chickahominy River has been postponed due to rain. The closure will now take place Tues., Sept. 2 at 11 p.m. until Wed., Sept. 3 at 5 a.m.

The Virginia Department of Transportation has announced the following local lane closures or traffic adjustments for the week of Sunday, Aug. 31 through Saturday, Sept. 6.

James City

  • I-64 East – Motorists should expect alternating lane closures between Lightfoot (Exit 234) and Camp Peary (Exit 238) for guard rail installation, Tues., Sept. 2, through Fri., Sept. 5, from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.
  • I-64 West – Motorists should expect alternating lane closures from the Lee Hall Bridge (near Exit 248) to the Queens Creek Bridge (near exit 239) to clean pavement markings from Tues., Sept. 2, through Thurs., Sept. 4, from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.
  • Route 615 North/South – Motorists should expect alternating lane and shoulder closings at Route 5 (Five Forks area) for work crews to construct a right turn lane, Tues., Sept. 2, through Fri., Sept. 5, from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Charles City/James City

  • Route 5 East/West – The Judith Stewart Dresser Memorial Bridge Route 5) over the Chickahominy River will be closed to motorists so construction crews can pour the concrete deck for the new Route 5 bridge, Tues., Sept. 2 at 11 p.m. through Wednesday, September 3 at 5 a.m.

    As a result, travelers will use these detours:

    From Charles City County (eastbound Rt. 5) take Route 155 north in Charles City County to Route 60 east in New Kent County to Route 614 south in James City County, then back to Route 5.

    From James City County (westbound Rt. 5) take Route 614 north in James City County to Route 60 west in James City County, through New Kent County, then to Route 155 south in New Kent County, through Charles City County, then back to Route 5.

    Due to the length of this detour (63 miles), motorists are encouraged to make alternate travel plans, if possible, or allow two hours’ additional travel time.

York County

  • I-64 East – Motorists should expect a single lane closure from Route 199 (Exit 234) to Route 143 (Exit 238) for pavement milling and asphalt overlay, Tuesday, September 2, through Friday, September 5, from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.

James River Bridge

  • Route 17 North – Motorists should expect a single lane closure for bridge safety inspections, Tues., Sept. 2 through Fri., Sept. 5, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Route 17 North – Motorists should expect a single lane closure and intermittent traffic stoppages for bridge gate maintenance, Tues., Sept. 2, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
  • Route 17 North/South – Motorists should expect alternating lane closures for drainage cleaning and sweeping, Wed., Sept. 3, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Newport News/Yorktown

  • I-64 West – Motorists should expect a single, mobile lane closure between Ft. Eustis (Exit 250) and Lightfoot (Exit 234) for tree trimming operations on Wed., Sept. 3, through Fri., Sept. 5, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • I-64 West – Motorists should expect a single lane closure from Camp Peary (Exit 238) to the Denbigh Boulevard Bridge Overpass (Exit 248) for bridge maintenance and pavement markings, Tues., Sept. 2, through Fri., Sept. 5, from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Newport News

  • Jefferson Avenue Widening Project – Route 143 North/South – Through March 2010, motorists should expect alternating lane closures and traffic shifts on Jefferson Avenue from Buchanan Drive to King’s Ridge, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. for construction activity.
  • Warwick Boulevard Project – Route 60 East/West –VDOT will begin shifting traffic between Hiden and Nutmeg to the west side (on to new pavement) starting the night of Tues., Sept. 2 and ending the night of Wed., Sept. 3. Motorists should expect police assisted lane closures, north and south bound, between Hiden and Sweet Briar for pavement marking operations and lane shift, Wed., Sept. 3 and Thurs., Sept. 4, from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Lane closures will be in effect through project completion in November 2009.

Newport News/Hampton

  • I-664 North – Motorists should expect alternating lane closures between 35th Street and 26th Street (Exit 7) and the I-64/I-664 Interchange (Exit 1) for sign panel installation, Tues., Sept. 2, through Fri., Sept. 5, from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.
