NEWPORT NEWS – Roger V. Butler, 78, died Thursday, May 15, 2008, at his home surrounded by his loving family and friends.
Roger was born in Ennis, Texas, and has lived in the Tidewater area for over 50 years where he met and married Thelma Elizabeth Shaner who predeceased him. He retired from NASA where he worked helping contractors and NASA personnel collaborate in the growing computer industry.
Roger’s life was dedicated to bringing people together. He taught Sunday School at the Presbyterian Church for 50 years and was an avid woodworker and artist. Many Hilton community members cherish the bowls he made from trees that lined Main Street. Generations of young men and women remember well his Middle School Sunday School lessons. Whether carving wooden bowls or shaping young souls, Roger’s work was dedicated to his Lord.
Roger is survived by his loving wife, Catherine Tarbutton Butler, with whom he was blessed; his daughter, Sara Butler; his son, Larry Butler and his wife, Joanne; his brother, Jack Butler and his wife, Cissy; and his sister, Janice.
A private graveside service will be held Monday, May 19, with an open memorial service at Hilton Presbyterian Church at 4 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hilton Presbyterian Church or the Newport News Food Bank.
