NEWPORT NEWS – Robert Earl Garrison, 93, passed away on Saturday, May 17, 2008.
Mr. Garrison was born in Bedford County, Va., on Jan. 28, 1915, and had been a peninsula resident for over 70 years. He was the son of the late Samuel R. and Addie (Gibbs) Garrison. He was a member of Temple Baptist Church, where he was a Deacon and served in many other capacities. He had a deep love for music and enjoyed singing in various choirs and groups.
Mr. Garrison served in the U.S. Army in the Tank Division during WWII and retired as a receiving clerk from Newport News Shipbuilding after more than 30 years service.
Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Johnnie D. Garrison; two children, Thomas R. Garrison and his wife, Diane, of Hampton, and Sylvia J. Garrison of Newport News; and one granddaughter, Kimberly Mantooth and her husband, Michael, of Hampton.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Clara A. Burke.
A visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 20, at W. J. Smith & Son Funeral Home, with a funeral immediately following at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Stanley Hicks officiating. Burial will be in Peninsula Memorial Park.
