YORKTOWN – Arnetia Landing Dawson, 92, of Yorktown, Va., passed away on May 17, 2008, surrounded by her family. Mrs. Dawson was born on May 28, 1915, in Isle of Wight County, Va. She was the daughter of Joseph T. and Annie Atkinson Landing.
Mrs. Dawson was an active member of the Providence United Methodist Church in Dare since 1931 where she was a dedicated Sunday school teacher. She founded a Sunday school class which, in recognition of her efforts, was subsequently named after her. She was also a founding member of the local Women’s Christian Temperance Union and was a long time member of the United Methodist Women. In addition to her church work, she was an enthusiastic hobbyist who was always busy making something for one of her family or a church bazaar. Long before it was popular she was a high school basketball player. Most importantly, Mrs. Dawson raised four children and saw to their education.
Mrs. Dawson was preceded in death by her husband of almost 50 years, Sidney W. Dawson, an infant son, a granddaughter, Jenelda Stratton, and her brother, Thomas W. Martin.
Mrs. Dawson is survived by her four children, Arlene D. Connell and her husband, Doug, of Yorktown, S. Wallace Dawson Jr. and his wife, Bonnie, of Lancaster, Va., Mary Lee Dawson of Yorktown, Virginia D. Sekula and her husband, David, of Jacksonville, Fla.; seven grandchildren, Kathy Coppa, M. Ashley Dawson, Sidney W. Dawson III, Jennifer Cashwell, Daniel Sekula, Sarah Sekula and Leah Sekula; six great-grandchildren; a nephew, Thomas W. Martin Jr. and his wife, Jean, of Norfolk; and a cousin, Louise Crocker and her husband, Emmanuel, of Hampton.
Funeral arrangements will be under the direction of the Amory Funeral Home in Grafton where the family will receive friends on Monday evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m. A funeral will be held at Providence United Methodist Church in Dare on Tuesday, May 20, beginning at 2 p.m. followed by interment at the church cemetery.
